Abstract
1353188 Stranding machines OKI DENSEN KK 13 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 14724/71 Heading D1T [Also in Division H1] An apparatus for producing a stranded conductor may be used in either the paying out or the taking up fashion. In Fig. 1, which depicts the apparatus taking up a stranded conductor 2, strands 1 are fed by a capstan 6 through a stationary guide plate 7 and a rotary twisting member 8. The conductor is then wound onto a flanged reel 18 via pulleys 20 mounted on a rotatable ring 19. The reel 18 is detachably mounted on a hollow shaft 16 cantilevered at one end by a pedestal 32 and the ring 19 is supported by four rolls 24-27 mounted on a pedestal 30. A detachable flyer 13, which prevents contact between the conductor 2. and the adjacent flange of the reel 18, is mounted on a shaft 15 inside the shaft 16. The flyer may also assist in rotating the conductors. An electric motor drives the main drive shaft 12 which rotates the capstan 6, the twisting member 8 and the shafts 15, 16. A torque motor 35 rotates the ring 19. In order to wind the conductor on the reel 18, the ring 19 is rotated at a different rate from the reel. When the rate of rotation of the ring is to be slower than that of the reel the torque motor may be replaced by a brake and the tension in the stranded conductor causes the ring to rotate. A reversible motor 34 moves the ring 19 along its longitudinal axis so that the conductor is wound uniformly along the reel, and, as the diameter of the reel together with the wound conductor increases, the pitch of the conductor also increases. When paying out, the apparatus has separate conductors, 2-5 Fig. 2, wound around the reel 18 and these are passed around pulleys 20-23 and then through the twisting member 8. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, not shown, the torque motor is omitted and the ring 19 is rotated by the main drive shaft 12. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 not shown, the reel 18 is rotated by the torque motor 35 and the ring 19 is rotated by an electric motor (46) via the main drive shaft 12, the relative rate of rotation between the ring and the reel being varied so as to produce a stranded conductor with constant pitch.
