Abstract

Interpolymers of ethylene and a vinyl ester of an organic acid which are soluble in alcohol or alcohol-toluene mixtures are hydrolysed to the extent of 80 to 100 per cent. The interpolymers are preferably those having a molar ratio of vinyl ester to ethylene greater than 1 to 5 and may be prepared as described in Specification 582,093. Vinyl esters specified are vinyl acetate, propionate, isobutyrate or benzoate. Hydrolysis may be effected by dissolving in methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl or cyclohexyl alcohol, mixtures thereof with benzene, toluene, xylene, pyridine, dioxane or trichlorethylene or aqueous mixtures of acetic acid, dioxane, methanol or ethanol and treating with alkalis, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide or acids, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric or p-toluenesulphonic acids. The product may be separated by filtration or steam distillation. They may be converted into fibres by melt or solvent, e.g. alcohol, spinning. Their strength may be increased by cold or hot drawing in air, water or oil. Films may be made by calendering, pressing between heated plates or by casting solutions. The softening point and tensile strength may be increased and the solubility reduced by treatment with formaldehyde, dimethylol urea or uron, bis-(methoxymethyl) urea or uron, hexamethylene di-isocyanate and diacyl chlorides; by treatment with sulphuric, phosphoric or hydrochloric acids followed by heating. Plasticizers, e.g. b -ethoxyethyl and di-(methylcyclohexyl) adipate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, 1,12-diphenylol-octadecane, hexamethylene glycol, tricresyl phosphate and dibutyl phthalate, pigments, dyes, fillers and resins may be admixed with the product. Uses include coating paper and fabrics, safety-glass interlayers, wrapping films, ball covers, tubes and liners for fuel hose and tanks. Raw hides may be treated with the products followed by treatment with formaldehyde. Specification 527,532 is referred to.
