Abstract

Para-vinyl-benzyl alcohol and its acetate are polymerized alone or as copolymers with other compounds containing an ethylenic linkage, e.g. styrene. In examples: (1) para-vinyl-benzyl alcohol is heated with benzoyl peroxide to give the polymer as a hard solid; (2) para-vinylbenzyl acetate (10 per cent) and styrene (90 per cent) are heated together, no catalyst being necessary, to produce a colourless transparent resin whose physical properties are stated.ALSO:Para-vinyl-benzyl acetate is produced by heating para - (alpha - acetoxyethyl) - benzyl acetate with a silica gel catalyst in the presence of steam; the acetate may then be subjected to alkaline hydrolysis when para-vinyl-benzyl alcohol is formed. The pyrolysis is preferably effected in the vapour phase at from 300 DEG to 600 DEG C.; the catalyst may be an extended surface material. Examples are given of the two steps of the process. Para - (alpha - acetoxyethyl) - benzyl acetate may be made by the process of Specification 633,435.
