Abstract
A fibrous, felted, spun or woven glass base is impregnated with a monomeric ester of a glycol and two molecular equivalents of the half ester of carbonic acid with a monohydric mono-unsaturated alcohol containing an olefinic double bond attached to the second carbon atom from the hydroxyl group, and heated to polymerize the ester. Suitable glycols are ethylene, a - or b -propylene, butylene, diethylene, triethylene, or hexamethylene. Suitable unsaturated alcohols are vinyl, allyl, methallyl, crotyl, methylvinylcarbinyl, isopropenyl, a -ethylallyl, b -ethylallyl, dimethylallyl, hexenyl, geranyl, or linallyl. The ester may be copolymerized with another unsaturated compound, e.g. vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, butadiene, 2-chlorobutadiene, methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride or styrene. An oxygen catalyst, e.g. benzoyl, lauryl, tetralin or acetone peroxide or a peroxide of methyl ethyl ketone, methyl butyl ketone or methyl tert.-butyl ketone may be added to the impregnant. The fibrous glass sheets may be used between glass or metal plates. Several sheets of fibrous glass may be laminated. Preferably the sheets are thin. A number of examples are given of the preparation of laminated "Fibreglass" cloth sheets using a mixture of ethylene glycol bis-(allyl carbonate) and benzoyl peroxide. In one example the benzoyl peroxide was omitted. The products are chemically resistant and may be used for building materials, furniture cabinets, electrical panels, brake bands, wall boards, electrical insulations, veneer, dishes, lamp shades, clutch faces, table tops or floor coverings. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes generally the use of unsaturated esters of polyacids. In addition to the glycols mentioned above it refers to glycerol, methyl glycerol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, trithanolamine, and ethylene or propylene diamine. Additional unsaturated alcohols mentioned are citronellyl, linoleyl and oleyl. Acids other than carbonic which are mentioned are phthalic, adipic, succinic, oxalic, sulphuric, phosphoric, titanic, silicic, citric, tartaric, maleic, fumaric, itaconic and malonic. Compounds described in Specifications 575,386, 576,083 and 595,056 are also referred to. Esters of unsaturated alcohols and simple polybasic acids, e.g. oxalic, maleic, malonic, adipic, succinic, itaconic, citric, tartaric, fumaric, phthalic, sulphonic, carbonic, silicic, phosphoric, titanic, diglycolic or dilactic may also be used. Allyl or methallyl esters of phthalamide or adipamide are referred to and reaction products of aldehydes with unsaturated carbamates, phthalamates or oxamates. Specification 576,153 is referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
