Abstract

632,814. Cooling cement clinker &c. ALLEN & CO., Ltd., E., and ANDREWS, H. March 26, 1947, No. 8251. [Class 51 (ii)] Apparatus for cooling material discharged from a rotary kiln 1 into a chamber 8 comprises an inclined lower grate 10 enclosed in a chamber 12 to which cooling air or gas is admitted through a duct 13, and an upper grate or grid 11 arranged substantially parallel to the lower grate to ensure that material falling by gravity between the grates forms a layer of substantially uniform thickness. The lower grate may be a perforated sheet or a grid formed of spaced bars or louvres. The upper grate or grid may be' formed of widely spaced and thick bars, preferably circular in cross-section, the width or thickness of which is so related to the angle of repose of the material that no substantial quantity of material will pass between them. The cooled material is discharged into a hopper 22 by a rotary member 21, furnished with blades or vanes, which co-operates with a circular wall of the chamber to form an air lock. The rate of discharge of material may be regulated by an adjustable gate 20 which also assists in preventing egress of cooling air. The air is supplied to the duct 13 by a fan 14 and the rate of flow may be controlled by a slide valve 15. The chamber 12 is divided by a partition 18 so that the air heated by passage through the upper parts of the grates is caused to enter a flue 19 leading to the lower end of the kiln. The duct is fitted with a by-pass 16 through which a regulated quantity of air may be directed through the lower parts of the grates and out of the chamber by way of the flue 17.
