Abstract

631,694. Printing-machines. BOSTON HERALD - TRAVELER CORPORATION. May 19, 1947, No. 13404. Convention date, March 1, 1947. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] Printed insets S are fed to and associated with printed webs W<SP>1</SP>, W2 as delivered from printing-presses PP, and each inset is adapted to register with a blank space in the printed web and is secured thereto by means of paste applied either to the inset sheet or to the web, and the invention comprises electrical or mechanical means for synchronizing the actuation of the sheet-feeding device with that of the printing-machine and the sheet-feeding device is adjustable laterally so as to register the inset edgewise of the printed paper. The sheets S are fed in succession by known suction devices 9 to three conveyers 7, each arranged to accelerate the sheet until it is passed from the last conveyer to a crotch between the innermost webs W<SP>1</SP>, W<SP>2</SP> at the same speed as the webs. The webs W<SP>1</SP> are all led over guide rolls 4 and pass to a roll 5, and the webs W<SP>2</SP> all pass over rolls 3 and pass to the roll 5, the inset S being received between the webs Wl and W<SP>2</SP>. As shown in Fig. 4 the first roll 4 is mounted in a pivoted arm 17, and the inset sheet is pressed against the last conveyer 7 by a roller 18. Also paste is applied to the web Wl by a roller 23 driven by gearing 29 operated by a flexible shaft 34 from the motor 31 which operates the sheet feeding device SF. The roller 23 is supplied with paste from a duct roller by means of a roller fitted with a pair of radial projections, Fig. 8 (not shown). The sheet-feeding device . can be moved transversely over rollers 8 by means of a screw 81. The synchronism between the printing-machine and the sheet-feeding machine may be maintained by means of a differential gear 85, Fig. 3, arranged between shafts 82, 83 geared respectively to the printing-machine and the sheet feeder. Bevel gears 87, 86 on the shafts 82, 83 are geared to similar gears 88, 89 mounted in a rotary casing which is driven by a motor 90 to effect synchronization under control of handoperated switches Sa, Sb, or under control of photo-sensitive devices. Alternatively an automatic electric control system of the Selsyn type may be used which is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2, and comprises elements 45, 48 of an electrical synchronous transmission link which gives a signal when the rotor 42 of element 45 is out of phase with rotor 54 of element 48. The rotor 42 is geared to the printing-machine, and rotor 54 geared to the sheet-feeder by a change-speed gear which can be adjusted to enable the insets to be fed to different positions in a web. The element 45 is connected to a source of alternate current a, c and to the element 48, which is connected to the primary coil T1p of a transformer T1, the secondary of which is divided and the halves connected to grids g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> of valves V1, V2, the anodes of which are connected to divided secondaries of a transformer T2 connected to the lines a, c. The valves V1, V2 control the complementary halves of a field winding F of a precision speed regulating generator 66 driven by a motor 65. The generator drives the motor 31 of the sheet-feeder. The coil T1p is normally connected to the mid-point of a resistance R which is also connected to a transformer T3. By adjusting the position of the point of connection of line n to the resistance R the machines may be adjusted under hand control so as to cause exact registration of the inset, and then the connection is returned to the mid-point t and synchronism of phase is maintained automatically.
