Abstract

630,583. Winding yarn. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. March 5, 1947, No. 6270. Convention date. March 7, 1946. [Casses 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] An automatic multi-spindle pirn winding machine comprises a series of spindles and a corresponding series of pirn-tube guiding means, each of said spindles being adapted to rotate a pirn-tube held between said spindle and the corresponding guiding means with its base in engagement with said spindle, a common rocker shaft carrying the series of guiding means and means for rocking said shaft so as to rock the series of guiding means simultaneously away from and towards the series of spindles to release a complete pirn from and engage a fresh pirn with each spindle. The main drive to the machine rotates a pulley 11 which drives the input shaft 15 of the "gainer case," for driving the spindles through clutch arrangements. The main drive can be put " on " or " off " by a belt shifter operated by a handle 18. Each bank of spindles, say 20 on each side of the machine, is collectively controlled, normally, by' a master spindle on one side of the machine. When the master pirn has reached a predetermined size, a finger on the traversing mechanism trips the sizing lever that normally holds the starting lever 33 in the " on " position. The release of the lever 33 initiates the ejection of the filled pirn from each spindle, the replenishing of each spindle by an empty pirn and the starting of a new wind. The tripping of the lever 33 operates a switch 35 to energise a relay and start a doffing motor 38, and, at the same time stops the rotation of the spindles and lights a white lamp 39 to indicate to the operator that doffing has commenced. The motor 38, through a flexible coupling 42, drives a worm 46 and wheel 47, which, through a spring-urged clutching pin 72 drives the shaft 48, which through worm and worm wheel 49, 51, drives a cam drum 54. This drum has two cam grooves 55, 56 and also rotates two plate cams 57, 58. The drive between the worm 46 and the wheel 47 is spring-urged so to " give " if jamming occurs in the machine. In such a case, the switch 66 is opened to shut off the motor, extinguish the white light 39 and light a red light 67. The shaft 48 may now be turned by a handle applied at the top, the pin 72 being thereby also pressed to free the drive, until the jam has been relieved. The switch 66 will be reset manually before the winding operation can be recommenced. As the drum 54 rotates, rods 74, 75 are moved by the cam groove 55 and a rod 76 by the groove 56. The rod 76 moves a bar 79 to turn a latching arm 81, associated with each spindle, so that a wire 85 thereon lifts a stopping lever 87 for that spindle. ' The rod 74, carrying a rack 102, rotates a pinion 103 to rotate shafts 104, 109 which through a gear 112 and a rack 113 brings an arm 115 to bear against a lever 118, fixed to the traverse mechanism of each spindle, to bring the same back to starting position at the base of the pirn, a wire 121 engaging the uncut yarn and leading it to a point directly in front of a rubber washer 29 on the spindle 17 which drives the pirn. Rod 75 moves a carriage 122 having fingers 124 for holding an empty pirn towards the position for delivering it to the spindle 17 and end support 32. A wire 127 on the carriage guides the uncut yarn and holds it adjacent the spindle while the arm 115 returns. The plate cam 57, through a lever 91, rotates the rock shaft 92 so that the pirn end supports 32 move forward and thrust the pirn tubes against the washers 29 to trap the yarns thereagainst. The filled pirns, previously doffed, fall into prismatic-shaped hoppers 98 closed by spring-pressed doors 153. The plate cam 58, through a finger 89 (not shown) maintains the motor switch closed. Movement of the rod 76 also operates a rod 135 to operate a pair of shears 136 to sever the yarn. Further, hooks 146 on a bar 145 moved by the rod 76, engage the yarn and carry it out of the traversing means to allow a bunch-mechanism of any form to wind a bunch. The rod 76 also restarts the spindles 17 by engaging the clutches therefor in the gear box. The box 79 has attached thereto an arm 155 which contacts with a pin 156 on the door 153 of the hopper 98 to open the same and allow the filled pirn to fall into any suitable receptacle. Empty pirns are fed to the carriage 122 through a rotary feeder 163 operated by a pawl and ratchet device energised by the movement of the carriage 122. At the completion of the doffing and other operations mentioned above, the finger 89 (not shown) opens the switch 88 to stop the doffing motor 38, the winding of the pirns proceeding uritil the next master pirn reaches the predetermined size when the doffing motor is again energised. With the exception of the master spindle, any spindle may be stopped and restarted during the winding operation, but if it is desired to stop the master spindle the main control switch 169 must first be opened or the whole bank would begin doffing. A green light 168 indicates the opening of the main switch 169. If any pirn is filled before the master pirn, the spindle will be tripped, but doffing will not occur until the master spindle initiates this operation. Specification 619,499 is referred to.
