630,095. Secret transmission. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. May 2, 1947, No. 11874. Convention date, July 9, 1945. Addition to 630,094. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (c)] A signal transmission system comprises means for determining at predetermined intervals the amplitude of a signal wave, means for building up by steps an electrical quantity proportional to the predetermined amplitude and means for transmitting a series of pulses defining each electrical quantity thus built up. At the receiver, a corresponding quantity is built up, conducting devices being selectively conditioned by the pulses of a series, to change the voltage due to a constant current in a load, each by a fixed fraction of a voltage which represents the maximum amplitude of the signal wave. Output pulses are then produced of amplitude proportional to the voltage across said load. The circuits described are similar to those of the second embodiment of the invention described in the parent Specification, the difference being that the controlled attenuators for building up the electrical quantity representing the signal amplitude by varying the gain of amplifier stages are replaced by controlled conductances of the same form as the attenuators and shunted across a line.
