Abstract

630,007. Phase changing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 5, 1945, No. 17134. Convention date, July 12, 1944. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a single-phase to three-phase conversion system, the single-phase input and two phases of the three-phase output have common terminals 1, 2 and a saturable reactor 7 in parallel with capacitor 6 is connected between the third output terminal 3 and terminal 1. The system may supply a three-phase motor 8 through a switch 9, the effect of the saturable reactor 7 and condenser 6 being that the voltage drop between terminals 1, 3 falls as the load rises, and during starting the three-phase side remains balanced. The choke may act as an autotransformer to supply the condenser at a voltage higher than that between terminals 1, 3. Fig. 1 illustrates the fundamental principles of single three-phase converters of the kind to which the invention relates, but without the saturable reactor. Terminal 5 of condenser 6 may be moved along an auto-transformer 4 connected between terminals 1 and 2 to keep the load balanced at different power factors.
