Abstract
629,853. Artificial stone. MOLINS, D. W., RUAU, F. F., BRUCE, C. G., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Dec. 16, 1947, No. 33144. [Class 22] [Also in Group VI] The rubbing surface of a garniture base for a continuous rod cigarettemaking machine is formed on an inset 1 made of a ceramic material containing at least 75 per cent of aluminium oxide or silicon carbide, the inset being mounted in a support 2 made of a reinforcing material, e.g. steel. As described, the complete inset is divided longitudinally into 4 parts formed to make a continuous groove 9 diverging at one end, and two grooves 10 are formed on the underside to reduce the thickness to that under the groove 9 to reduce shrinkage when the material is fired. The insets are bonded to the support by a plastic material, e.g. one comprising a phenol formaldehyde compound with polyvinyl, and they may have separate guides 11 of ceramic material bonded to steel bases 12, and ceramic-faced folders. The inserts are formed by firing a moulded mixture of preferably 90 per cent aluminium oxide with zirconium oxide and grinding with silicon carbide wheels. If silicon carbide is used for the insets, diamond wheels are used for the grinding.
