Abstract

629,003. Bookbinding-machines. AULD, G. T. Jan. 21, 1947, No. 1904. [Class 16] In a booklining machine in which back lining strip material is fed in a direction transverse to the back of an arrested book inner on to a displaceable support above the book inners which are back fed upwards along adjustably spaced guide channels and a strip of the material then cut off, the means for picking up the cut off strip and lowering it to the back of the book inner is mounted to swing on its actuating member about an axis parallel to and located above the book and a cam device causes the pick-up means to swing transversely of the book at the lower end of its travel into correct register with the centre line of the back of the book inner. Book inners 4 are fed between a fixed guide 1 and an adjustable guide 2, the previously glued backs 4a being supported between nipping guides 6 and held stationary for an appropriate period beneath a paper support 8 pivotally mounted at 9. A paper web 12 is fed from a reel 12a under tensioning rollers 12b and between gluing rollers 17 and feed rollers 15, 16 to the support 8 when a vertically swinging knife 11 severs a strip 121. The reel 12a, rollers 12b, 17 and 15, 16 are supported on a sub-frame 13 and the knife 11 is secured to a carrier 11a pivoted on the upper part 13a of the frame 13 and actuated from a rod 53 through a cam follower on the main shaft 32, the frame 13 being adjustable simultaneously with the guide rail 2 to allow for different thicknesses of book inners and to adjust the length of the strip 121, the lower feed roll 16 is rotated intermittently through a stroke rack 19 on the end of a vertically slidable rod 23 which has adjustably spaced collars 24 between which works a bush 25 with links 26, 27, 28 to the machine frame 14, the link 27 carrying a roller 29 engaging a cam groove 30 in a disc 31 on the main shaft 32. A pick-up arm 38, with suction nozzle 39 connected by a flexible hose 40 to a pump 41, is pivoted on the free end of a rack 37 sliding in an arm 36 and which has an adjusting pinion 37a which may be geared to the mechanism for adjusting the guide rail 2 to effect simultaneous adjustment of the rack 37 and guide rail 2. The arm 36 is adjustably mounted on the end of a rod 33 which is reciprocated in a bracket 34 by a link 35 connected by a cam and follower to the main shaft 32. Secured to the pivoted end of the pick-up arm 38 is an arm 42 carrying a roller 43 held by a spring 47 in contact with a cam 44 curved so that as the rack 37 and arm 38 descends, the arm 38 will swing transversely of the book back 4a. The cam 44 is adjustably mounted on pillars 45 sliding in a bracket 46 to ensure correct register of the arm 38 with the centre line of the back 4a, The support 8 is pivoted to swing downwards and forwards out of the way of the descent of the arm 38 by means of a toothed sector 48 meshing with a sector 49 which is rotated through a rod 50 reciprocated by a cam on the drive shaft 32. The pump 41 is operated through a cam to interrupt the suction during the last part of the descent of the pick-up arm 38. Headband strips 51, which pass through gluing rollers, may also be fed from reels 52 through the feed rollers 15, 16. A known form of dampening and pressing down device is reciprocated along the back 4a to cause the strip 121, with or without the headband strips, to adhere thereto.
