[Class 40 (ii)] In a recording and reproducing apparatus using cylindrical records, the transducer 26 is supported on a cantilever 25 which is suspended on horizontal pivots 24 on a carriage 11, so that when said carriage is raised by eccentric members to a neutral position, Fig. 1, a cam 16 on a cam-strap 17 disengages a half-nut 6 from the lead-screw 4, and an extension 19 on the cam-strap 17 engages one end of a doubleended lever 29 so that the other end lifts the cantilever 25 and transducer 26 from the record 3. The cantilever pivots 24 are set in a gimbal ring 23 mounted on vertical pivots 22. When the carriage 11 is lowered to the reproducing position, Fig. 2 (not shown), the halfnut 6 re-engages the lead-screw 4, and the reproducing stylus 28 engages the record 3, the transducer 26 being free to float in a position approximately normal to the axis of the record 3. When the carriage is moved to the recording position, Fig. 3, the lead-screw 4 is again engaged by the half-nut 6, the recording stylus 27 engages the record 3, and the position of the transducer 26 and cantilever 25 with regard to the carriage 11 is locked on the vertical gimbal pivots 22 by means of a member 31 which comes into contact with cylindrical members 18, the shape of the end of the member 31 being such that the stylus 27 is set down slightly in advance, along the record, of the position occupied by the stylus when reproducing.
