Abstract

628,772. Ammunition hoists. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and BRERETON, C. F. Oct. 1, 1947, No. 26520. [Class 92 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] A load-conveying hoist comprises a guide connected between a lower loading point and an elevated unloading structure such as a gun platform, the structure being displaceable to vary the distance between the two points, and the guide being free to change its effective length automatically according to the change in distance between the two points. Furthermore the invention provides means to feed loads in succession along the guide and automatic means to adjust the effective range or length of operation of the feeding means according to the changes in effective length of the guide. The guide comprises telescopic parts la, 1b, connected between a gun turret 4 and a deck plate 7. The guide carries pivoted pawls 10 and pawls 11 operated by rams 15, 16. The pawls 11 move in slots in the guide and are carried by a vertical rod 12 connected by a cross-piece 13 to the rod 14 of the ram 15. The second ram 16 parallel to the first has a rod passing through a cross-piece 18 connected to the upper end of the ram 15 and having a cross-head 19 carrying the uppermost pawl and also a lug 20 attached to a shaft 21 guided through a lug 22 at the upper end of the ram 16 and in driving engagement with a crank 23 and operating a cut-off valve 24 of the shuttle type. The valve has relative motion to its rod 24<SP>1</SP> between stops 24a, 24b, for giving a quick reverse motion to the rams. Opposite ends of the valve are connected by leads 25, 26, to the rams. The valve moves between seatings 28, 29, the seatings 29 having a bleed opening 29<SP>1</SP> to control the speed. The upper section 1a of the guide has an abutment 31 which is struck by a lever 32 on the cross-head 19, the lever being linked to a crank on the shaft 21, whereby a partial rotation of the shaft drives the rod 24<SP>1</SP> against a spring allowing the valve to seat in the seating 29. The connection of the rams to the source of pressure is by means of a control valve 34 between valve 24 and cut-off valve 35. The fluid is admitted until the lever 32 strikes the abutment 31. On movement of the valve 34, the rams are retracted. To position with the gun breech, the guide may have an upper part 1c swivelling about an upper pivot.
