Abstract

628,415. Washing-machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., CROPPER, W. C., and WELLS, G. M. May 16, 1947, No. 13266. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Groups II and XXIII] A clothes-washing apparatus comprises a rotatable platform for supporting articles within a container of cleansing fluid, in combination with a vibratory means to agitate the fluid by variation of pressure at an ultrasonic frequency. A casing 1 having a hinged lid 2 contains a tub 3 inside which is a platform 4 supported and rotated by a motor-driven shaft 5. The platform supports a wire basket 13 into which clothes for cleaning are placed, the basket being positioned by studs 14 on the platform. A magneto-striction vibrator 7 made with a plurality of rectangular laminations is mounted on the casing tub by means of two members 8 which engage the smallest faces and is so positioned as to be partially submerged in the cleansing fluid. The vibrator coils are energized by a thermionic valve generator at a frequency such as 50 kilocycles per second and so causes supersonic pressure variations in the liquid. The vibrator may be mounted in contact with the tub walls and piezo-electric or electro-magnetic vibrators may be used if desired. The liquid is heated by a thermostatically-controlled heater 9, 10, and the tub has a drain pipe 11.
