[Class 16] A machine for finishing the binding of books comprises means for moving a succession of pasted books having covers applied thereto but with the paste initially not set, from station to station, means operable at spaced positions along the said path for applying pressure to the sides of the covers of the successive books to form creases along the lines of the cover joints, and means including pressure plates adjacent the discharge end for applying opposed inward pressures to the entire areas of the covers of the successive books beyond the said joints. The machine is identical to that described in Specification 513,353 in respect of the mechanism and operations performed at stations A, B ... F. A supplementary station H is provided at which the books 10 are pressed to flatten the covers; by slides 170 and 172 carrying presser plates 166 and 168, the latter are actuated by fluid pressure applied through a piston 196 and rod 194 within a cylinder 198. The plate 166 is adjustable transversely for different thicknesses of books by a screwed shaft 174 carried by a slide 170 which supports the plate 166. The shaft 174 is rotated through gearing 190, 188, 186 and a shaft 184 also operates similar gearing 210, 206, 200 for adjusting the opposing plate 168. A valve device 212, Fig. 8 controls the flow of fluid through pipes 216. 218 to either side of the piston 196. The valve device is operated by levers 220, 222 and 226, the lever 226 engages adjustable stops 230 and 232 at either end of the travel of the carriage carrying the carrier jaws to cause through the mechanism described plate 168 to move inwards or outwards. Carrier jaws 164 convey the books from a transfer station G to station H and are operated in the same manner as the other carrier jaws 14 at stations A ... F (not shown). A shoot for the delivery of the books comprises a sheet metal plate 250 which overlaps a shelf 242 and is resiliently mounted on the plate 168 to hold the plate in engagement for all positions of the presser plate 168.
