Abstract

A dentifrice comprises lactic acid and/or one or more of its derivatives which are substrates of lactic dehydrogenase and which are capable of acting as hydrogen donators, and fumaric acid and/or one or more of its derivatives which are substrates of succinic dehydrogenase and are capable of acting as hydrogen acceptors, together with an abrasive, ethereal oil, glycerine, mucilage, disinfectant, antibiotic material, neutralising agent, surface active agent, fermentation inhibiting agent or medicament. According to examples (1) a powder consists of calcium lactate, sodium fumarate, calcium carbonate and a flavouring agent; (2) a paste consists of calcium lactate, sodium fumarate, calcium carbonate, glycerine, carboxymethyl cellulose, water, essential oil and a trace of saccharine.
