[Class 128] [Also in Group XXIII] A device for collecting sweepings, e.g. a dust pan or crumb tray, is formed with spaced walls 1 jointed by a transverse rear wall 5, a bottom, upwardly inclined member 2 and a forwardly projecting cover flap 3. A collecting plate 4 is attached to extensions 1a of the walls 1 so as to form a front extension of floor member 2, the collecting edge 4a being lower than the rear edge 4b and making a firm edge or line contact with the surface on which the device is placed. The bottom of the device is thus arched and the member 2 forms with the rear wall 5 a bottom rear edge of sharp angular form which lies at the extreme rear of the device and is adopted to make sharp edge contact with the said surface across the entire width of the device and also lies in the same plane as the leading or collecting edge 4a. Alternatively, as shown in Figure 3, the collecting edge 4a may be bent so as to lie in the plane containing the rear transverse edge of the device and the forward ends of the wall extensions 1a. The plate 4 may be secured to the extensions 1a by nails or screws or may be slidably engaged therewith. The device may be of section built construction, the members being formed of wood, plastic or metal. The device may be formed in one piece (Figs. 4 and 6) from the metal blank shown in Fig. 5. The members 2 and 4 may be provided with bent over tongues 2a, 4c which form flanges for securing the said members to the end walls 1. The device may be provided with a handle which may be inclined forward as shown so as to apply a forward and downward pressure on the pan in use. A front cover flap preferably spring loaded may be hingedly fitted to act as a closure for the open front of the device. The flap may be arranged for manipulation by hand or by a foot pedal or may be disposed so that it is deflected by the brush or other sweeping means. The entire device with or without the collecting plate 4 may be formed in one piece by moulding, pressing or casting from metal or a hard-setting plastic or a combination of such materials.
