Abstract

627,625. Control of two motors. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and SWAFFIELD, P. J. Jan. 31, 1947, No. 3070. [Class 38(iii)] A, control system for two separate motors connected in parallel to a current supply source and normally sharing a load, for example one or more fans, incorporates means operating automatically upon failure and cutting out of circuit of either motor to reduce the flow of current through the other motor which still continues to operate. Normally motors A and B are connected in parallel by closure of switches 5 and 6, resistors 3 and 8 being short-circuited by relays 4 and 7 respectively. When the motor A fails, for example, the switch 5 opens to isolate that motor, and the solenoid 13, which is connected across the armature 2, is de-energized to introduce resistor 8 in series with armature 9 so limiting the current therethrough. Similar operation occurs when the other motor fails. In an alternative arrangement, resistors included in the field circuit of each motor are short-circuited to provide increased field strength of one motor upon failure of the other. The short-circuiting devices may be centrifugally operated. Inductances may replace the protective resistors.
