Abstract

627,618. Blind riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and RUDDOCK, R. Jan. 7, 1947, No. 498. [Class 43] [Also in Group XXII] Tubular rivets are assembled with headed mandrels by a machine having means for delivering mandrels in an orderly manner from a bulk supply, means for similarly delivering rivets, and means for assembling a mandrel and rivet, each mandrel being necked in the machine prior to completion of the assembling operation. A batch of identical mandrels are supplied to sorting means A, being placed in a hopper 21 and then passing into a raceway 23 in which they hang by their heads in a row. An annular carrier 29 is driven round anticlockwise about a horizontal axis through 30 degrees at a time, so that during a rest period at the end of each 30 degrees movement one of twelve equally-spaced recesses 31 in the carrier is uppermost. During each such rest period two detents 25, 27 provided on the means A move across the raceway 23 to detach the end mandrel from the row, said mandrel then dropping into the uppermost recess 31 until its end contacts a fixed internal guide 33. As rotation proceeds each mandrel is carried round to a station V where its head engages at a rest period a stop 37, situated beneath the lowermost recess 31 and secured to a screw 39 threaded in a fixed bracket 41. During this rest period the mandrel, positioned lengthwise by the stop 37, is necked by a pair of opposed cutters, the position of the neck relative to the head of the mandrel being determined by the position of the adjustable screw 39. The depth to which the mandrel is necked may be varied by making the operation of the cutters adjustable. A batch of identical tubular rivets with heads is supplied to sorting means B similar to the means A. A carrier 55, rotated clockwise in synchrony with the carrier 29 about a horizontal axis perpendicular to and level with the axis of the carrier 29, comprises a disc 59, which is integral with but spaced at its periphery from a thinner disc 57 and which has twelve equally-spaced U-shaped recesses 61, the uppermost of which at each rest period of the carrier receives the barrel of the end rivet from the means B, the head of the rivet lying between the discs 57, 59. As rotation progresses each rivet arrives at a station S where it is level with the axis of the carrier 29 and is aligned with a necked mandrel carried up from the station V ; at the station S during a rest period the mandrel is thrust out of the carrier 29 into its rivet by a driver bar 63 fixed to a guided, horizontal slide 65 operated by a lever 69. During further rotation of the carriers the assembled mandrel and rivet are retained in their recess 61 by a fixed guide 83 until they fall down a chute 85. Specifications 176,519, [Class 43], 501,415, 530,882, 558,156, 578,363 and 602,652 ear referred to.
