Abstract

[Class 37] [Also in Group XXXVIII] To detect the position of vehicles or aircraft over a runway, a plurality of pairs of coils are disposed in the ground below the runway so that they normally have zero mutual inductance, but the approach of a mass of metal increases the coupling between the coils. The coils may be connected to the input and output of an amplifier system such as that described in Specification 574,808, so that coupling causes the system to oscillate. Alternatively, A.C. may be fed into one coil of a pair, and an indicator connected to the other coil. In the latter case, a phase detector may be used to differentiate between the phase of the induced oscillations due to the different " impedance " of vehicles and aircraft. Airfield service vehicles may carry a resonated coil to augment the difference. The coils may be formed partly by an earth return.
