[Class 58] Apparatus for re moving the outer layers of hard-ker nelled grains comprises a horizonta cylindrical rotor 2 having on its periphery a plurality o: straight continuous tooth projections along its whole length and approxi mately parallel to its axis, the tooth pro jections having wide smooth crowns with sharp arris edges and being interspaced with wide smooth-floored shallow grooves of a depth not exceeding half the average minor diameter of the grains throughout the greater part of the rotor, with a short length of the grooves at each end of the rotor preferably having a depth at least as great as this average minor diameter, a casing comprising a lower part-cylindrical screen 4 and an upper domed cover part 3, an inlet 15 adjacent one end of the casing an outlet 17a adjacent the other end of the casing, means for restricting circumferential flow of grains around the casing, the means preferably comprising a spring steel strip 7 projecting from the casing on the up-going side of the rotor and means, preferably a plurality of deflector plates 14a, for moving grains horizontally along the casing. Means comprising a holder-bar 6 and cams 8 may be provided for adjusting the clearance between the inner edge of the blade 7 and the surface of the rotor, and a second strip similar to strip 7 may be fitted on the downgoing side of the rotor if desired. Impurities discharged through the screen 4 are removed by a conveyer or by an air exhaust system. The Provisional Specification also describes the rotor as having slightly spiral grooves or having its surface roughened with emery or other abrasive, and also refers to the fitting of a valve to the delivery spout to open only under a suitable head.
