Abstract
Organo-germanium halides are prepared by reacting heated germanium and a hydrocarbon halide which is preferably in the vapour state. Suitable hydrocarbon halides are alkyl and aryl chlorides or bromides such as methyl chloride, ethyl chloride, methyl bromide and chlorobenzene The germanium may be in the form of the metal itself, or an alloy with another metal, or may be intimately associated with a metal catalyst for the reaction, e.g. by forming an alloy. Suitable metallic catalysts are copper, silver, nickel, tin, antimony, manganese and titanium. In examples, dimethyl germanium dichloride, methyl germanium trichloride and trimethyl germanium chloride and the corresponding bromides, diethyl germanium dichloride, ethyl germanium trichloride and diphenyl germanium dichloride are prepared. The products may be hydrolysed to form the corresponding oxides. Similarly, other organo-germanium halides may be prepared, e.g. alkyl germanium halides such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, isoamyl and hexyl germanium halides, aryl germanium halides such as phenyl germanium halides, aryl substituted aliphatic germanium halides such as benzyl and phenylethyl germanium halides, and aliphatic - substituted aryl germanium halides such as tolyl germanium halides.
