Abstract

626,373. Edging lenses &c. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). Jan. 27, 1947, No. 2549. [Class 60] A lens edging or like abrading machine in which a rotary spindle carrying the work and a former is movable towards and away from the grinding wheel, the movement being determined by the co-operation of the former with a contact shoe, is provided with a control device which automatically varies the speed of rotation of the work spindle in accordance with engagement and disengagement of the former with the contact shoe. The machine comprises an edging stone 12; a spindle 17 carrying the lens 14 and a former 16 is mounted in a swinging head 15 pivotally attached to the base 11. The edging stone spindle drives through chain and sprockets a back shaft which is connected through gears 25, 26 with a work drive shaft 27. The latter drives, through gears 30, 31, a shaft 32 on which are rotatably mounted gears 33, 34 meshing respectively with gears 41, 40 on a shaft 38 which, through further gearing, rotates the work spindle 17. A clutch member 37 slidably keyed on the shaft 32 is operated by a pivoted lever 42; a spring 54 normally holds the parts in slow speed position; energization of a solenoid 57 moves them to high speed position. The solenoid 57 is under control of a micro-switch 73 to which is actuated through a push rod 76, by the contact shoe 61 when this is engaged by the former 16. Thus, when a portion of the lens requiring no more grinding is in contact with the grinding wheel the engagement of the former with the contact shoe will actuate the micro-switch so that the work spindle rotation will be speeded up.
