[Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIV] A piston packing ring 5, having an outer surface which is normally elliptical and a maximum free diameter equal to or slightly greater than that of a cylinder 1, is freely mounted between a metal piston head 4 and a thrust member 6, without any rigid part confining the inner surface of its bore, by means of springs 10, 7. As shown, the spring 10 engages a valve piston comprising a thrust member 11, a packing ring 12 having a maximum free diameter less than that of the cylinder, and a metal head 13 which in turn bears against a packing ring 5<SP>1</SP>. During the suction stroke of the piston 4, 5, 6, the head 13 is retracted from the ring 5<SP>1</SP> and liquid flows into the cylinder 1 through a port a and through the longitudinal bore of the valve piston. On the pressure stroke the packing ring 12 is expanded radially into sealing contact with the cylinder by means of the hydraulic pressure within the cylinder and the mechanical pressure of the spring 10. The packing ring 5 is expanded similarly, the radial hydraulic pressure counteracting the axial hydraulic pressure thereby preventing deformation of the ring. As applied to a wheel cylinder, opposed pistons separated by a spring are used and thermal contraction of the packing rings 5, due to braking heat, is avoided by keeping the maximum free external diameter of the rings below that of the cylinder bore. Any contraction that may take place is automatically taken up by the spring.
