Abstract
Calciferol esters, e.g. calciferol benzoate, acetate propionate, oleate and chaulmoograte are obtained by converting pure Vitamin D2 into the ester by means of an acid chloride in the presence of pyridine and benzene or another solvent for Vitamin D2 and the ester thereof, which does not react with the other reagents present and which is such that pyridine and the acid chloride do not cause splitting of the solution into distinct phases. Excess of acid chloride and pyridine is removed with sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric acid and the products are purified by crystallisation in acetone or an acetone-methanol mixture. Detailed examples are given.
