Abstract

625,195. Making electric discharge tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO., Ltd., and ESTERSON, M. March 28, 1947, No. 8528. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering.-Parts of electric discharge devices such as mercury vapour rectifiers, magnetrons, and other electron discharge tubes, are united by constituting at least one of the parts of nickel or a material containing nickel and raising molybdenum or a material including molybdenum in solid form to a temperature of the order of 1300‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere such as of hydrogen to produce a jointing connection in the form of an alloy containing nickel and molybdenum. The two parts may be mechanically fitted together and a ring or other body of molybdenum placed round them at the joint and the assembly heated above 1300‹ C. in a hydrogen atmosphere. Molybdenum wire or molybdenum and nickel wires or wires of molybdenum-nickel or like alloys may be used. In making a rectifier the thimble may be of nickel-iron or similar alloy for sealing into glass and the main envelope of steel, and in making magnetrons a nickel plug may be thus united to a nickel cathode, and in making some transmitting tubes a glassed thimble of an alloy sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Kovar " may be joined to a steel header.
