Abstract
Bleachable pulp is obtained from ligno-cellulosic material by a single step alkaline pressure cooking process wherein the full-pressure cooking is carried out at or about the temperature at which the encrustants of the material react with the cooking liquor with the maximum reaction velocity and the time of this full-pressure cooking is restricted to 20 minutes or less. The temperature of maximum reaction velocity differs for different classes of ligno-cellulosic materials. In the case of pine wood it is approximately 200 DEG C. For wheat straw it is about 186 DEG C.; corn stalks 185 DEG C.; hemp tow 183 DEG C.; flax tow 182 DEG C.; bagasse 173 DEG C.; phragmites communis, arundo donax 172 DEG C.; bamboo 170 DEG C. In practice, temperatures up to 5 DEG C. above or below the temperature of maximum reaction velocity may be used. The alkaline treatment liquor preferably contains the equivalent of 17-22 per cent of active Na2O based on the weight of air dry raw material. To avoid any substantial disintegration of the material during the time taken to heat up the contents of the cooker to the desired reaction temperature, this period is restricted to about 50 minutes or less. In an example, chips of Jack pine are treated with a liquor containing caustic soda, sodium sulphide, and sodium carbonate. The temperature is raised within 47 minutes to 199 DEG C. and maintained at this level for 18 minutes, whereafter the relief valve of the cooker is opened and the contents are discharged.
