Abstract
624,592. Uniting by fusion. WELDING SUPPLIES, Ltd., and LIDSTONE, L. A. April 8, 1947, No. 9345. [Class 83 (iv)] In an arc welding-apparatus a head, slidable on a guide rising from the base, is provided with a carrier for an electrode pointing downwardly in an inclined direction to rest on the seam, the carrier projecting laterally from the guide so that the plane containing the electrode is clear of the guide and a second apparatus provided with an electrode may be mounted behind the first to carry on the welding operation when the first electrode has been consumed. The base 11 resting on the work carries a slotted guide 15 engaging guide rollers 18, 19 on a gravityoperated slide 20, in which is mounted a horizontal slide-bar 24 carrying a flux-coated electrode which rests on the seam. The amount of metal fed to the seam may be varied by adjusting the angle of inclination of the electrode. The electrode holder 25 overhangs the plane of the slide-bar 24 so that the base and upright 15 are located to one side of the plane in which the electrode 27 works. The bar 24 may carry a pulley 28 over which passes a cord 30 fixed at its ends to pegs 31, 29 on the bar and guide respectively so as to vary the rate of feed along the seam. The slide-bar carries a stop 32 to abut the work when the electrode is nearly consumed. The electrode-holder 25 may be rotatable on the slide-bar 24 and provided with a spring bias tending to move it in an anticlockwise direction as described in Specification 624,601 to facilitate transfer of the arc from one electrode to the next. The guide may be hinged at 14 to the base so as to adapt the apparatus for fillet-welding. In a modification, the pin 31 may be carried on the other end of the slidebar so that the latter moves away from the base as welding proceeds. In another modification, the pulley 28 may be replaced by two drums of different diameters, one provided with a cord connected to the guide and the other with a cord connected to the slide-bar, so as to vary the rate of traverse of the slide-bar with respect to the rate of descent of the carrier. In a further form, the guide 15 is replaced by channelled guides 50, 51, Fig. 7, engaging the rollers 60 on the vertical slide 54, 56, the member 50 carrying a fixed rack 62 engaging a pinion 63 on a shaft 64 carried by the slide, the shaft at one end having a gear 65 meshing with a gear 66 on a shaft 67, which at its other end carries a pinion 68 so as to traverse a rack 69 on the horizontal slide 71 which carries the inclined electrode. The gears 65, 66 are removable and held in place by knurled nuts 77, 78. In any of these forms means may be provided to fix the horizontal slide to the vertical slide if desired. In another form, Fig. 9, the inclined electrode 27 is carried by a slide 81 descending by gravity a curved guide 80 which is hinged at 14. Specification 646,016 also is referred to.
