Abstract

112,353. Quasi-Arc Co., and Cole, W. L. March 9,1917. Heating by electricity.-In apparatus for carrying out the electric welding processes described in Specifications 1274/12 and 11079/12 wherein a coated electrode is employed, the electrode is automatically fed down to the work as it burns away, and the work is moved longitudinally relative to the electrode and at the same time a slight transverse movement is provided between the electrode and the work. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the electrode 14 is secured to a weight mounted to slide on a bar 10 secured to a traversed saddle 6. The work 17 is stationary. An oscillating movement is imparted to the bar 10 by a rotary eccentric shaft 4 connected thereto. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the electrode is fed forward by a weight 20 connected to a slide 22 on a stationary guide 25. The work is fed forward by a screw. The oscillating movement is given to the electrode by an eccentric shaft acting through lever mechanism. The oscillating movement may be given to the work-holder. In a further modification, the electrode is mounted between guide-rollers mounted in a movable saddle connected to a weight. The traversing speed of the carriage is determined by the feed of the electrode. In a modification of this construction, the carriage is operated by a screw, and the electrode fed by a brush rotated by toothed gearing engaging a stationary rack. If the work is a round object, it is mounted in centres and rotated beneath the electrode. A spring may be used instead of a weight.
