Abstract

The polyvinyl benzals obtained by the process described in the parent Specification are treated with a leuco derivative of a vat dyestuff in aqueous medium, the polyvinyl benzal then being washed free from excess leuco derivative, then oxidized to effect the dyeing, the product being finally washed and dried. The polyvinyl benzals are derived from polyvinyl alcohols which may contain ester and/or acetal groups, and aldehydes of the benzene and naphthalene series. When deep shades are required the polyvinyl acetals preferably contain hydroxy groups. The vat dyestuff may be an indigoid or anthraquinoid dyestuff, including indigo, thioindigo and the halogen, amino, alkyl and alkoxy derivatives of indigo, anthraquinone, benzanthrone, pyranthrone, anthanthrone and dibenzanthrone. The reduced dyestuff may be used in conjunction with a dispersing agent such as sodium sulphoricinoleate or sodium oleyl sulphate or with a stabilizing agent. When dyed, the resins may be mixed with other thermoplastic resins or thermosetting resins, fillers, plasticizers or pigments. The products may be used as pigments or moulding powders, in paints, lacquers and coating compositions. Mottled effects may be obtained by incomplete mixing with other dyed or undyed polyvinyl benzals.ALSO:The polyvinyl benzals obtained by the process described in the parent Specification are treated with a leuco derivative of a vat dyestuff in aqueous medium, the polyvinyl benzal then being washed free from excess leuco derivative, then oxidized to effect the dyeing, the product being finally washed and dried. The polyvinyl benzals are derived from polyvinyl alcohols which may contain ester and/or acetal groups, and aldehydes of the benzene and naphthalene series. When deep shades are required, the polyvinyl acetals preferably contain hydroxy groups. The vat dyestuff may be an indigoid or anthraquinoid dyestuff, including indigo, thioindigo and the halogen, amino, alkyl and alkoxy derivatives of indigo, anthraquinone, benzanthrone, pyranthrone, anthanthrone and dibenzanthrone. The reduced dyestuff may be used in conjunction with a dispersing agent such as sodium sulphoricinoleate or sodium oleyl sulphate or with a stabilizing agent. When dyed, the resins may be mixed with other thermoplastic resins or thermosetting resins, fillers, plasticizers or pigments. The products may be used as pigments or moulding powders, in paints, lacquers and coating compositions. Mottled effects may be obtained by incomplete mixing with other dyed or undyed polyvinyl benzals.
