Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble monoazo dyes of formula <FORM:1001706/C4-C5/1> wherein A is a radical of the benzene series which may be substituted by non-water-solubilizing groups. The dyes are prepared by coupling a diazotized amino-benzene in substance or on a substratum (e.g. aluminium hydroxide) with 6-(21-hydroxy-31-naphthoylamino) - 2,4 - dioxo - 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydroquinazoline. The grain and tinctorial strength of the dyes is improved by coupling in the presence of anionic, cationic or non-ionic emulsifiers, by adding organic solvents to the aqueous suspension obtained after coupling and heating, or by after-treating the dry dyes or dye pastes by heating in a solvent such as nitrobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, pyridine, formamide, dimethylformamide, N - methylacetamide or phosphoric acid tris-dimethylamide. The dyes are red to brown pigments used in printing colours and lacquers or to dye rubber, paper, polyvinylchloride and textiles. The preparation of the dyes is described in examples.
