Abstract

624,179. Transmitting mechanical power. DESMOULINS, E. H., and THIRIET, M. July 11, 1946, No. 20713. Convention date, July 11, 1945. [Class 38 (iv)] In an electromechanical power unit for a vehicle, a first element of a differential gear is driven by the prime-mover, a second element is connected to a dynamo-electric machine electrically connected to another dynamo-electric machine driven by the prime-mover, and the third element of the differential is mechanically connected to the driving wheels of the vehicle, the two dynamo-electric machines each having both series and separate excitation windings and means being provided to vary the magnitudes of the separate excitation currents and, in the case of the second machine, the direction of the excitation current also. As shown in Fig. 2, the axles 30 of a self-propelled vehicle are driven from the satelite carrier 10d of a differential gear 7-9, the planet wheel 7 being driven by the prime-mover 1 which also rotates a dynamo-electric machine 3a. Planet wheel 8 is connected to the shaft of a second dynamo-electric machine 3b, the armature of which is connected in opposition to that of the machine 3a. Both machines have series field windings 14a, 14b, and windings 15a, 15b, which are variably and separately excited by an engine-driven source 5. The controller 16 for winding 15a permits reversal of excitation of machine 3a. A " forward " and " reverse " clutch 25 is engageable with either of pinions 19, 23, which are oppositely rotated by the satelite carrier through gears 18, 20, 21. A solid mechanical drive is obtained by locking together the members of the differential and opening the armature and field circuits of machines 3a, 3b. The clutch may be dispensed with and the reverse drive obtained by de-excitation of machine 3b. Specification 21173/03, [Class 38], is referred to.
