Abstract

623,812. Turrets. WHARTON, W., and WHARTON, J. Aug. 1, 1946, No. 22962. [Class 83 (iii)] A multi-sided drum 1 constituting a base for jigs and fixtures is arranged with its faces parallel to the central axis about which the drum is rotatable and with a plurality of machined T-slots 2, 3 in each of such faces, means being provided for securing the rigidity, and preventing the rotation, of the drum and removing from the supporting trunnions the whole of the vertical thrust of a machine tool operating on a component mounted in one of the faces. Each of the end walls of the drum carries a disc 6 provided with a stub axle 7 rotatably supported in bearings 8 which are secured to standard elements 11 mounted in vertical T-slots in the inner faces of a supporting bracket 4. The drum is rotated by means of an arm 14 which is provided with a spring- pressed pawl 19 and a cam 32 controlling a projection 28 on a pivoted arm 26 ; the pawl 19 and projection 28 engage notches in a disc 17 for locating the drum in position. For wedging the drum in operative position, two pairs of wedges 41, 42 are mounted on screwthreaded rods 36, 37 so that they can be slidden on inclined surfaces 43, 44 of elements 35 towards and away from the drum. The T-slots 2, 3 are disposed longitudinally and/or transversely in the faces of the drum. The bearings and supports for the drum, and the rotational and wedge mechanism, may be built up from standardised elements as described in Specification 587,448.
