Abstract

623,275. Bearings. KENDRICK, J. F. April 23, 1947, No. 10878. [Class 12 (i)] In a multiple bearing comprising an assembly of a plurality of individual bearing units, means for equalizing the load on each comprises interposing plastically deformable washers 21 (e.g. of lead, copper, zinc, aluminium and their alloys, bronze, or beryllium copper), between the bearing units and their supports. A plurality of thrust bearings 10, Fig. 1, have load equalizing washers 21 between each lower race 10a and each bracket shelf 11a of the stationary member of the bearing assembly. The washers 21 are designed so that the yield pressures will occur above the normal rated capacity of the bearing. Thus the bearing is initially subjected to a progressively increasing loading pressure until such plastic deformation of the washers is effected as to distribute the total load on the assembly over the bearing units. Similar washers may be interposed between the upper races 10b and housings 13. In a bearing having an extremely narrow race, a sole plate 23 may be interposed between the race and the washer 21, Fig. 3. A construction, Fig. 4, wherein the deformation of the loadequalizing washers may be arrested comprises the bearing races 10a, 10b set in recesses 24 provided in the housing flanges 25, 26, the recesses 24 being undercut at their bottoms, thereby providing spaces 28 into which the material of the load-equalizing washers may be forced. The deformable washers may have age-hardening characteristics. A concentric multiple thrust bearing with deformable washers 21 and a multiple radial bearing having deformable encircling rings are also shown, but the invention may be applied to any type of bearing.
