Abstract
622,856. Covering playing pitches. HUGHES, P. April 5, 1947, No. 9224. [Class 20(i)] A protective covering for football or other pitches comprises a plurality of overlapping strips of tarpaulin, canvas or the like, suspended transversely of the centre line of the pitch on ropes extending longitudinally of the pitch and supported on vertical posts or stakes, the strips being secured along their outer edges by further ropes, with beadings along the adjacent edges of juxtaposed strips to project upwards and form channels to conduct water therefrom. Stakes B and B<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, support ropes C and C<SP>1</SP> stretched longitudinally of the pitch at centre' line and touchline positions respectively, and strips A are fastened to the ropes and positioned transversely of the pitch by hooks a, Figs. 1 and 4. The adjacent edges of the juxtaposed strips A are provided with beadings a<SP>2</SP>, and the upper edges of the strips on the longitudinal centre line of the pitch have flaps a3 which overlap flaps a3 on strips extending over the other half of the ground. The ropes C are prevented from splaying outwards by wire clips C\ Fig. 4, or the hooks a may cross to connect with the ropes supporting the strips on the other half of the ground.
