[Class 83 (iv)] A cutting-off device for extrusion presses comprises cutting elements which are urged towards the cutting position by a spring or by fluid pressure but are normally restrained by a catch which is released when a cut is to be made. Extruded rod E issuing from the extrusion die 13 passes through guide tubes 47 and 46 between which is interposed the cutting- device mounted on top of the cylinder 18 of the die-holder shifting device. The cutting-device comprises two rotary members 20, each having four cutting elements. The members 20 are geared together and are rotated intermittently by a ratchet mechanism actuated by a piston 28 and arm 25, the movement of the pawl in the cutting direction being temporarily restrained against the fluid pressure in the cylinder 30 by a catch 34, Fig. 3, released by a solenoid 41 acting through rod 40, pivoted lever 38 and trigger 36. The cutters may be actuated at regular intervals to cut-off equal lengths of rod. In a modification, Fig. 6, co-operating shear-blades 51 are urged in the cutting direction by springs 53 when released by catches 55 under the control of solenoids 59. Dividing by a single blade.-In another form a single blade is operated by a spring, assisted by gravity, when released by a solenoidcontrolled catch. A fluid-pressure cylinder may be used to reset the blade at the completion of the extruding operation.
