Abstract
622,445. Filling shoe-bottom cavities. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., BAGSHAW, C. M.,' CHOICE, F. C., PRATT, J. W., and WHITE, P. March 26, 1947, No. 8214. Addition to 611,993. [Class 17 (i)] The means described in the parent Specification for controlling the supply of filling material to a shoe cavity and also those for yieldingly pressing the margin of the plate-like member which constitutes the diaphragm of the matrix device against the bottom of a shoe to be filled, are modified, the first mentioned to avoid the withdrawal of that portion of filling material which remains in the passageway below the two-way valve through which such material is fed, when a shoe is withdrawn after completion of the filling operation ; and the second in order to relieve the pressure between the margin of the platelike member or diaphragm and the shoe bottom, when the cavity has been sufficiently filled. In the machine described in the parent Specification, a plunger and associated pick-up device move across a drum containing a mass of filling material in plastic condition to pick up a quantity and expel it to a cylinder 9 and thence through a passageway in a rotary two-way by-pass valve 13 to a channel 19, and thence through a tube 23 extending through the flexible diaphragm 5, into the cavity of a shoe held beneath it. When sufficient material has been extruded into the cavity, the valve 13 is turned by means under the control of the operator, to cut off the supply of further material and divert it back to the drum, the shoe'supporting means simultaneously releasing the shoe from the diaphragm. According to the invention a cut-off valve, formed by a tapered end of a rod 87, is operated against a spring 91 by the foot treadle which actuates the by-pass valve 13 at the end of the filling operation, to bear against a seat 103 of the tube 23 close to the work-engaging face of the diaphragm and trap filling material in the lower end of the tube and prevent its withdrawal when the shoe is removed from the machine. A plurality of compression springs 55 are arranged between supporting members 52, corresponding in number, spacing and general arrangement to those of the earlier machine, in engagement with the diaphragm 5 and yieldable relatively to one another, and a backing member 57 to urge the margins of the diaphragm into firm pressing engagement with the shoe bottom by four rods 61 bearing against the member 57 and actuated in pairs by cam bars 67 (not shown) to move all together, when pressure is applied to the shoe supporting pads by toggle mechanism, as described in the earlier Specification. The members 52 are moved away from the diaphragm, to allow the margin of the diaphragm to be drawn up against the rim of the matrix device and relieve the pressure, when the foot treadle referred to above is operated, i.e. when the shoe bottom cavity has been sufficiently filled as observed by the operator when filling material emerges at the rear end of the matrix device near the shoe waist. The foot treadle controls the toggle mechanism by which the shoe supporting pads are pressed to support the shoe against the diaphragm.
