[Class 40 (iii)] Printing telegraph apparatus comprises means whereby the local record of a transmitted message has an identification mark printed in the margin to distinguish it from a received message. When the type carrier is at its beginning-of-line position a detent 9 thereon turns a bell-crank 7 clockwise to the position shown. When the apparatus is transmitting and making a local record, each rotation of the transmitter cam-shaft causes a cam 1 to rock a second bell-crank 2 counter-clockwise, lifting the first bell-crank 7, and an interposing member 3 on which it is pivoted, to the position shown, in which it is latched by the engagement of a shoulder of the interposing member 3 with a fixed lug 10. When the printing cam is operative an auxiliary printing member 11 strikes the interposing member 3 against the inked ribbon 5 to print a vertical line in the margin of the local record of the transmitted message. A lip 12 on the member 3 engages with the printing member 11 and prevents a spring 4 from returning the interposing member 3 to its lower position clear of the ribbon 5 until the printing member 11 is retracted. When the type carrier leaves its beginning-ofline position, the detent 9 allows a spring 8 to rotate the bell-crank 7 counter-clockwise clear of the second bell-crank 2, so that the interposing member 3 remains clear of the ribbon 5 while the remainder of the line is printed. If the apparatus is printing a received message, the transmitter cam 1 will be stationary and the interposing member 3 unmoved. The length of the vertical line printed is arranged to be slightly more than the height of a line of type so that each local record has a continuous line in its margin.
