Abstract

Castor oil is dehydrated to form a drying oil by passing it at a temperature between about 200 DEG and 325 DEG C. and at a reduced pressure of not more than 50 mm. of mercury over a catalyst comprising a chemical compound formed by calcining a liquid phosphoric acid with a siliceous absorbent to a temperature at which chemical combination takes place, e.g. for 10 hours at 450 DEG C. in the case of a mixture of orthophosphoric acid and kieselguhr containing about 60 per cent of total P2O5, the free P2O5 in the calcined catalyst being thereby reduced to 4.4 per cent. The catalyst may be placed in a stainless steel reaction tube within an electrically heated furnace fitted with a preheater, the portion of the tube in the preheater being packed with quartz chips. When castor oil is passed over this catalyst at an hourly space velocity of 1, a temperature of 275 DEG C., and a pressure of 30 mm. of mercury, 89 per cent by weight of dehydrated oil is collected in the receiver, while 1.9 per cent and 1.3 per cent respectively of such oil can be recovered from the catalyst and the quartz chips respectively when these are flushed with nitrogen. The catalyst is regenerated by burning in air. The process may be carried out in the presence of an inert diluent such as paraffinic hydrocarbons of the gas oil type sufficiently low-boiling to be separable by vacuum distillation from the dehydrated oil, but high-boiling enough to remain liquid during the dehydration reaction. U.S.A. Specification 1,993,513 is referred to.
