Abstract

619,295. Moulds for reinforced articles. CHAPUIS, E. A. Nov. 30, 1946, Nos. 35561 and 35562. Convention dates, May 14, 1940 and April 21, 1941. [Class 87 (ii)] Reinforcement-supporting members 4, 4<1>, Fig. 1, are adapted to clamp the reinforcement 3 between them until the reinforcement is sufficiently maintained by injected moulding material and are movable transversely of the reinforcement 3 by means 14, 18, operable from outside the mould 1, 1<1>, and causing the members 4, 4<1>, simultaneously to move inwards or outwards. Supports 4, 4<1>, are slidably moveable in opposed holes provided in parts 1, 1<1>, of the mould, and in the retracted position their inner ends, suitably shaped, are flush with the walls of the cavity 2. Each supporting member 4 or 4<1> is secured to a transverse bar 8, the bars 8 on each face of the mould being secured to two parallel longitudinal rods 9 provided at their ends with fingers 15. Two toothed wheels 14, 141, on a shaft 12 mesh respectively with racks 10, 11, 10<1>, 11<1>, formed with oblique elongated openings 16, Fig. 3, in parallel relation and adapted to coact with fingers 15. Actuation of the lever 18 causes the racks to slide in opposite directions as shown in Fig. 3, fingers 15 being displaced along openings 16, thus moving supports 4, 41, to the retracted position, whereupon more moulding material is injected to fill the voids left by the supports. The supports may be removed before the mould is wholly filled, as soon as there is sufficient material in the mould to support the reinforcement, in which case the supply of material is uninterrupted. The reinforcement-supporting device and actuation mechanism is also applicable to a multiple mould comprising a plurality of moulding recesses.
