Abstract

617,491. Permanent-waving. EUGENE, Ltd. Oct. 3, 1946, Nos. 29522 and 29523. Convention dates, Oct. 6, 1945 and Aug. 13, 1946. [Class 131] Relates to a process and apparatus for permanently waving hair by means of radiant heat such as the infra red radiations. As shown a hood 60, Fig. 8, is arranged on the head and adjusted thereto by spring-pressed shields 63, 64 having rubber pads 65, 66, the hood 60 having arranged on its inner surface a large number of infra-red heaters 12 connected to an electric supply. The hood 60 is provided with an opening 61 having a grating 62 adjacent to the crown of the head whereby convection currents, which may pass into the hood, may escape. A foraminous screen, transparent to infra-red radiation may be positioned between the head and the heaters. The heaters 12 are preferably arranged in groups pertaining respectively to the top, back and right and left sides of the head and arrangements may be provided whereby the time of heating may be automatically controlled and one or more groups of heaters switched on and off and the intensity of the heat controlled by the operator. Such an arrangement is shown in Fig. 1 wherein the supply through the plug 20 passes through a transformer 21 the primary of which is provided with tappings 28... 30 for different voltages and the secondary provided with tappings 23 ... 25 to vary the intensity of the heat. Switches 22 are provided for manual control of the groups of heaters R, B, L, T and a time switch 35 is provided for determining the time of treatment. Another circuit is shown in Fig. 17 where the groups of heaters for the top and sides of the head are each provided with fifteen heaters whereas those at the back are arranged as two sub-groups of twelve heaters in parallel so that the voltage drop being less than that of each of the other groups the intensity of heating will be greater at the back as is desirable. Manual switches S1, S2, S3, S4 are provided and if desired switches as in Fig. 1 may also be provided. The clamps and curlers for the tresses are of conventional form but are coated or otherwise treated at particular parts according as is desired to absorb or reject the radiant heat. As shown in Fig. 12 the ends 85, ratchet and key 84 of the curler rod are blackened or otherwise treated to absorb the heat radiations and convey them to the interior of the tress while the clamp is so prepared or treated as to reflect the radiations away from the head and to the tress which, as is usual; has been treated with the waving solution. The exterior of the tress may be covered by a satchet comprising a pad of felt &c. moistened with the waving solution, and an exterior surface 52 of foil &c. which is coated, blackened, or otherwise treated to absorb the heat radiations and convey them to the tress. Protectors 90 for the scalp may be provided through a slit in which a tress is passed. The protector comprises a pad 91 of felt the upper surface of which is coated with radiation reflection coating 93.
