617,059. Transmitting mechanical power; electromagnetic clutches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and AYRES, W. E. M. Oct. 21, 1944, Nos. 20420 and 25610. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] A slip coupling included in a motor vehicle drive has an automatic switch responsive to the reversal of slip to interrupt or reduce the excitation of the coupling when such reverse occurs to permit free wheeling. In the form shown, 4, 5 are the windings of a coupling driving a road vehicle from an internal-combustion engine which also drives the generator 32 for exciting these coils through a rheostat 31 linked to the throttle lever 36. When contact 30a of selector switch 30 is engaged, switch contacts 23, 24 which open when the driven member overruns the driving member of the clutch control the coil circuit, but these contacts are inoperative when the selector switch is turned. Contacts 30d enable the coils to be energized from battery 34 when it is desired to turn the engine from the road wheels. The coupling may comprise a toothed magnetic disc on one shaft between a pair of wound field magnets on the other shaft, as described in Specification 617,060.
