Abstract
326,921. Smith, C. S. Jan. 16, 1929. Controlling different functions by same lever; relay or power apparatus.-The magnet coil 3 on the driving-member of an electromagnetic friction clutch 4, 12 for road or rail vehicles &c. is energized from a generator 5, driven by the prime mover (not shown), when an adjustable switch 2 is allowed to close by depression of the throttle-pedal 1. The clutch becomes engaged only when the engines-speed is sufficiently high, and, if the clutch is designed to dissipate heat, the change-speed gear may be eliminated, the clutch slipping when the engine-speed is reduced by overload. A manual switch 8, coacting with a contact 9, may be placed in parallel with the switch 2 and, in the form shown, the switch 8 coacts also with a variable resistance 10 to switch in a storage battery 6, there being provided a cut-out 7 comprising series and shunt windings and a circuit-breaker to prevent current reversal. The battery is used to engage the clutch when the engine-starter acts therethrough, when re-engaging the clutch after coasting in order to turn the engine, and when it is desired to use the switched-off engine as a brake. Modifications are described in which no battery is provided, the switch 8 merely acting to short-circuit the switch 2 when the engine is to be used as a brake with the pedal 1 released. In one form, Fig. 2, (not shown), one pole of the generator 5 and one end of the coil 3 are " earthed " to the chassis &c., and in another form, Fig. 3 (not shown), the switches 2, 8 are arranged in the shunt field circuit of the generator. The Provisional Specification describes the driven member of the clutch as the excited member, and states that the coils may be energized from the external source.
