Abstract

616,563. Coated films. GENERAL ANILINE FILM CORPORATION. July 17, 1946, No. 21439. Convention date, Aug. 9, 1945. [Class 140] [Also in Group XX] The slippage and anti-static characteristic of sheets, films or foils of water insoluble, organic film-forming material is improved by treating the sheet on at least one surface with a solution of a monomeric, neutral, alkyl ester of silicic acid in a volatile solvent and subsequently removing the solvent. The esters of silicic acid used are of the formulae (R@O), (R2O), (R3O), (R4O) Si or (R@O), (R2O), SiO, where R1 to R4 each represent an alkyl group of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms. Examples of these esters are tetraethyl orthosilicate, trimethyl ethyl silicate, methyl triethyl orthosilicate and the diethyl ester of silicic acid. The treated sheet materials may be cellulose derivatives; polyvinyl chloride; copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride; polyamides; polyvinyl alcohol; polyvinyl acetaldehyde acetal resins; or partially hydrolysed acetate resins such as described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,939,422 and 2,036,092. An extensive list of solvents is given which includes solvent mixtures. The ester solution may be applied by dipping, spraying or brushing. Specification 581,751 is referred to.
