616,153. Glass fibres. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST. GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Aug. 29, 1946, No. 25995. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1943. [Class 56] In the manufacture of glass or other thermoplastic fibres by centrifuging, in order to prevent the formation of a crown of fibres an obstacle is located in the plane of projection sufficiently close to the periphery of the rotor, whereby the fibres meet the obstacle and are cut off. The obstacle may comprise a jet of compressed fluid intersecting the projection plane at 90 degrees or it may comprise one of a number of mechanical devices. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the obstacle may comprise a wire or rod 3 parallel to the axis of rotation; the wire may be moved along its own axis. Or the obstacle may comprise a cylindrical mandrel which may rotate about an axis parallel to that of the rotor and may reciprocate along this axis and the mandrel may be perforated and connected to vacuum. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the obstacle comprises a ridge 22 in the volute 23 formed between two plates. A blower, for example of the type described in Specification 611,623, may be positioned in the volute to draw the fibres before they contact the obstacle.
