Abstract

615,486. Respiratory appliances. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. June 12, 1946. No. 17580. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1939. [Class 81 (ii)] A closed circuit breathing apparatus comprises a mask 1, Fig. 1, connected by a single tube 2 to a breathing bag 51, Fig. 6, provided with an oxygen supply, spaced openings in tube 2 communicating with purifying canister 36 mounted in receptacle 21, and has check valve 41 adapted to open on inhalation disposed in the tube between the openings and adjacent the canister outlet. The exhaled air passes down tube 2, through canister 36 to the breathing bag 51 whence it returns via tube 2 by-passing the canister 36 due to check valve 41 opening on inhalation. Exhausted canister 36 is changed by opening cover 26 of receptacle 21 whereat spring urged valves 28, 29 close until a new canister is inserted; oxygen being breathed direct from the breathing bag and exhaled round the side of the mask 1 during this changeover. The breathing bag 51, Fig. 6, secured in box 52 on collapse to a predetermined point causes adjustable screw 87, in plate 83 fastened to the bag at 82 and hinged at 84, to open valve 57 and allows oxygen to enter through tube 81 from chamber 58 which is supplied from oxygen cylinder 53, through pressure regulating valve 64 controlled by bellows 62. The warm exhaled air from tube 2 passes into bag 51 round valve 57 preventing it freezing, but by-pass valve 92 is also provided for emergency use. A simplified form of collapsable breathing bag is. also described.
