[Class 135] [Also in Group I] A selector mechanism for controlling a plurality of valves comprises a number of valve-actuating plungers guided for parallel axial movement, means for moving all the plungers to a forward position, each against an individual restoring force, and a selector device, movable when the plungers are forward into different settings, in each of which selected plungers are allowed to move back while the others are maintained forward. Each of the seven operations involved in the recharging of the exchange materials of a watertreating apparatus (see.Group I) corresponds to one setting of a hollow rotatable cylinder 14, Figs. 1 and 2, provided with rows of holes 28 controlling the selective actuation of seven diaphragm valves 13, the latter being closed on to ports 15 by the forward movement of the plungers which are formed by telescoping parts 16, 18, pressed apart by springs 20. On rotation of a handle 26, a striker bar 21, in abutment with flanges 25 on the parts 18, forces the plungers forward, thus compressing the springs 20 and moving the parts 18 clear of the holes in the cylinder which may then be rotated to any desired setting. Release of the handle 26 permits the water pressure on, and the resilience of, the diaphragm valves, to move back the plungers positioned opposite the holes 28, whilst the remaining plungers are maintained forward by the springs 20 forcing the parts 18 into abutment with the surface of the cylinder. In a modification, the striker bar 21, Fig. 8, is actuated by a cam slot in a disc 45 which may be oscillated manually, or by a hydraulic piston or by an electric motor. The disc is in lost-motion connection with a ring 53 carrying a pawl 54 engaging a ratchetwheel 55 rigidly attached to the cylinder 14, so that one complete oscillation of the disc moves the selector mechanism to the next setting.
