Abstract
614,687. Coin-freed apparatus for dispensing liquids in measured quantities. COLEMAN, C. J. July 20, 1946, No. 21731. [Classes 27 and 106(v)] Apparatus for dispensing liquid in small quantities, such as fuel for mechanical lighters, comprises a rotary valve with a measuring cavity which can be turned manually, after a coin has been inserted to release a locking latch, from a normal position in which the cavity is charged from a reservoir, to a position in which it discharges its contents. The hollow conical plug valve 5 works in a bore in a block 2 which has a threaded socket 11 into which the neck of a bottle 12 of a lighter fuel is screwed. The bottle itself acts as the reservoir, and, in the normal position of the valve 5 a port 25 in it registers with a passage 15 leading to the socket 11 so that the hollow interior of the valve fills with fuel. On turning the valve anticlockwise by drawing down a handle 34, a second port 26 in the valve is brought into register with a discharge outlet 19 leading to a delivery spout 20 whilst the port 25 is brought into register with an air passage 23. The contents of the valve are thus discharged through the spout 20. To alter the amount delivered, the valve 5 is changed for another having a cavity 6 of different volume, or the valve is fitted with an end wall which is adjustable axially by means of an exterior screw to vary the effective capacity of the cavity. A liner 4 of cork or other elastic material is interposed between the valve and the bore in the block 2, and is lubricated by means of a film of castor oil and/or colloidal graphite. Coin action, weight.-Secured to a neck of the valve 5 is a coin pocket to which the handle 34 is attached, rotation of the pocket and valve being normally prevented by the engagement of the end 37 of a spring-actuated latch 38 pivoted at 40 under a step 39 in the pocket. An inserted coin falls down a chute 28 into the pocket and thrusts aside the catch 37 to release the pocket and valve which can then be turned by means of the handle 34. As the pocket turns, the coin moves away from the catch which holds it and falls into the lower part of the casing. The latch then relocks the pocket when the handle 34 is returned to refill the valve.
