614,656. Gear-cutting. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Tuly 17, 1946, No. 21345. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1945. [Class 83 (iii)] Milling-cutters.-A method of finishing the teeth 11, Fig. 1, of a roughed-out shoulder gear 2 comprises rotating the gear in mesh at crossed axes with a cylindrical gear-like cutting tool 1 having teeth 4 decreasing in chordal thickness from substantially one end to the other and in a direction away from the shoulder of the gear, the axis of the tool being perpendicular to a line perpendicular to the axis of the gear and passing through the meshing zone of the gear and tool to establish meshing contact adjacent the thicker end of the teeth of the tool, and relatively reciprocating the gears and tool generally axially of the gear to finish the gear teeth from end to end. The tool and gear are preferably rotated in one direction during their relative axial movement in one direction and their direction of rotation is reversed during their relative axial movement in the opposite direction, feeding of the tool and gear towards one another taking place at both ends of the stroke. The tool teeth are provided with grooves 6, Fig. 2, separating intermediate lands 8 having cutting edges 9. The inclination of the gear and tool axes is between three and fifteen degrees, while the decrease in chordal thickness of the tool teeth is between 0.0015 and 0.0003 inches.
