Abstract
613,837. Dynamo-electric machines. WICO ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25739. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1944. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXVII] An alternating current generator 1 for an ignition system (see Group XXVII) charges a condenser 2 through a bridge rectifier circuit comprising rectifiers 3a ... 3d. Each pulse of voltage provided by the generator is used to charge the condenser. The generator has a stator 11 carrying four coils 13 connected in series, the terminals being connected to points 18 and 19 on the bridge rectifier circuit. Each voltage wave from the generator has a sharply rising portion and an immediately ensuing sharply falling portion followed by a relatively long interval where there is no substantial change of voltage. The width of the pole faces 10 on the rotor (Fig. 4) is substantially wider than the width of the pole faces 32 on the cores 12 of the coils 13. The pole faces are true part cylindrical surfaces coaxial with the generator shaft and the clearance between the faces is preferably reduced to a minimum. Curves showing the variations of open circuit flux and open circuit voltage of the generator are indicated in the Specification. Curves of current to and voltage on the condenser, plotted against degrees of rotation of the generator, are also included. These show that the charging of the condenser oceupies a greater portion of the angular movement of the rotor at high than at low speed. Curves of current to and voltage on the condenser for a 12-pole generator are given and these illustrate how the range of advance of 40 degrees (20 degrees of rotation of the generator driven at half engine speed by the cam-shaft) can be obtained.
